Quality Control Technician

Job Scope

The Quality Control Technician role at Sugarbud is to measure and observe whether the current product and processes meet a set of quality standards for the production of high-quality cannabis which will be produced on a commercial scale in a licensed facility. To implement policies and procedures and enforce GAP, GPP, GMP, HACCP and Quality Control standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

This is a critical role in Sugarbud’s continued success and growth.  The role is responsible, but not limited to, for the following:

  • Measure the quality of products and processes using a pre-defined set of criteria;
  • Record information on products which do not conform to standards in the ‘QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – COMPLIANCE’ Module;
  • Ensures that all processing activities are carried out as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), at all times, to result in consistent quality medical cannabis products;
  • Assures compliance with in-house and/or external specifications and standards, such as GMP, GGP, GPP, GDP, CR etc.;
  • Liaise with Cultivation team, Processing team and others involved in production to create plans to improve quality;
  • Monitor process control points and take measures to eliminate deviations;
  • Ensures and monitors adherence to all facility SOPs relating to current GMPs and other applicable regulations; including but not limited to Change Controls, Deviations, Recalls, Returns and Customer Complaints;
  • Participate in internal audits for GPP and QA. This includes addressing Deviations, Corrective and Preventative actions;
  • Monitor supplier performance. Work with operations to resolve quality issues with production inputs;
  • Assist in sampling of raw materials and finished goods for testing and retention purposes, when applicable;
  • Spot trends in production line’s output that veers from expected quality;
  • Segregate all products and materials that fail to meet specifications or criteria;
  • Make suggestions as to how the quality process can be improved;
  • Maintain cleanliness of production areas at all times;
  • Complete all training and safety requirements;
  • Other duties as assigned;
  • Work as a team player;


  • Post secondary education in science, cannabis and/or engineering is considered an asset;
  • Experience in Quality Assurance/Control in a production environment is considered an asset;
  • Experience with Ample Organics is considered an asset;
  • Strong MS Office skills;
  • Must be familiar with the provisions of the Cannabis Regulations and the Food and Drugs Act;
  • Knowledge of Cannabis, grow systems, procedures and growth stages;
  • Solid knowledge and comprehension of Good Production Practices (GPP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP);
  • Attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Ability to multitask and to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to adapt to ever changing situations is essential;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to obtain Health Canada CTLS security clearance if required;
  • Willing to provide a criminal record is requested by the Company;
  • Exhibits a high level of attention to detail, accuracy, and vigilance;
  • Voices concern in a proactive and constructive solution-oriented manner;
  • Acts in a manner reflective of the company culture of high moral/ethical standards, innovation and continuous evolution, trust in team, continuous improvement, and sustainable relationships; and;

Working Conditions

  • Must be 18 years of age or older;
  • Working in an environment where Cannabis is present;
  • Available via telephone when needed;
  • Must carry and use personal swipe card and personal code to access secured areas;
  • Ability to remain calm and systematic in stressful situations;
  • Candidates must be reliable, and trustworthy;
  • Must have reliable transportation as public transportation is not available;
  • Follow all policies and procedures set up by the company.

Physical Requirements

  • Walking, standing, sitting behind a computer, able to lift loads up to 23Kg (50 lbs);
  • Ability to work in warm and cold conditions (up to ~30C, down to ~10 C);
  • Ability to work with and handle disinfection chemicals;
  • Ability to work in high noise environments with adequate hearing protection;
  • Ability to work in a high dust environment with adequate respiratory protection.
